The Italian Air Force has planned the acquisition of 20 new Leonardo T-346A trainer aircraft as part of the 2024-2026 Multi-Year Programmatic Document (DPP). Of these, 15 will be assigned to the National Aerobatic Team (PAN), the Frecce Tricolori, while 5 will strengthen advanced training capabilities. These aircraft will complement the 18 T-346 units already in service within the Italian Air Force used primarily in the IFTS (International Flight Training School) of Decimomannu.
The M-346 is an advanced transonic twin-engine trainer equipped with cutting-edge technology, including fly-by-wire controls, digital avionics, and integrated tactical simulation systems. This aircraft is already operational in numerous international air forces, such as those of Israel, Poland, Qatar, and Singapore. The PAN version will be specifically tailored to meet the Italian Air Force’s requirements, ensuring top-tier performance for both aerobatic and training missions.
Beyond its role in aerobatic displays, the T-346 plays a critical part in Italy’s military training system. Thanks to its ability to integrate “Live, Virtual, Constructive” (LVC) training scenarios, it allows pilots to operate in complex simulated environments that blend real flights with virtual simulations. This comprehensive approach prepares pilots for advanced operational missions, keeping Italy at the forefront of international aeronautical training.
The cost of this operation has not yet been officially disclosed.
