Russian Air Force Flight Highlights Strategic Presence in Benghazi

Yesterday, we tracked a rather interesting flight. A Russian Air Force Ilyushin Il-62 (reg. RA- 86561)landed in Bamako, Mali, coming from Moscow, with stopovers in Latakia and Benghazi.

What makes this particularly noteworthy is the stop in Benghazi, which, if further proof were needed, underscores the strong Russian presence in Cyrenaica. It highlights the region’s ongoing logistical importance to Russia. It’s no coincidence that many NATO surveillance missions take place off the Libyan coast.
