The first NATO mission of the year in the Black Sea theater involves a Boeing P-8A Poseidon is conducting a SIGINT mission along Romania’s eastern coast.
Similar missions have been regularly tracked over the past two years, but this one features some distinct characteristics.
First, the Poseidon operated in two separate areas. The initial phase was conducted over the northern region, near the Danube Delta, a zone typically associated with such missions. The second phase moved further south, close to the Bulgarian border.
The second noteworthy element is the altitude profile of the mission. The initial part followed the usual operational altitude of over 30,000 feet. However, during the latter phase, the aircraft repeatedly changed altitude, operating at an unusually low level of approximately 3,000 feet.
As of 15:30 CET, the mission is still ongoing.
