British mission over the Black Sea

A new surveillance mission by the Royal Air Force (RAF) is currently underway over the Black Sea as of 14:00 CEST. This operation is part of ongoing intelligence-gathering efforts in the region, where NATO forces have maintained a consistent presence due to heightened tensions and security concerns.

The mission involves a Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint (reg. ZZ665), a specialized reconnaissance aircraft equipped with advanced electronic surveillance systems. The aircraft took off from RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom and is currently flying southwest of Crimea, heading eastward. This type of mission is crucial for monitoring military movements, communications, and potential threats in the area.

To ensure the safety of the reconnaissance aircraft, it is being escorted by two Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 jets (reg. ZK342, ZK435), which departed from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. The presence of these fighter jets provides immediate protection in case of any hostile encounters, a necessity given the region’s volatile security situation.

Escorting surveillance flights over the Black Sea has become routine following the serious incident in September 2022, when a Russian fighter jet reportedly fired a missile at a British RC-135W. According to Moscow, the missile was launched mistakenly, but the incident raised significant concerns about the risks of escalation in such close encounters. Since then, NATO forces have implemented stricter safety measures, including mandatory fighter escorts for high-risk surveillance operations.

Supporting the mission logistically is an Airbus KC.2 Voyager tanker (reg. ZZ334), which also departed from RAF Akrotiri. The tanker is currently orbiting over eastern Romania, ensuring that both the RC-135W and its escorting Typhoons have sufficient fuel to sustain their operations for an extended period without the need for premature return to base.

This latest RAF mission highlights the ongoing strategic importance of the Black Sea region, where tensions between NATO and Russia remain high amid continued military activity and intelligence operations.
