U.S. Aircraft Activity Over the Mediterranean: A Link to Mare Aperto 2025?

The image shows two distinct aircraft operating in key maritime areas: a U.S. Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon conducting surveillance maneuvers off the coast of southern Italy and a U.S. Air Force Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker (reg. 61-0307) performing aerial refueling operations near western Greece. These activities could be linked to the upcoming “Mare Aperto 2025” naval exercise, the largest training operation of the Italian Navy.

The Boeing P-8A Poseidon, a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, was observed executing a series of intricate loops off the Calabrian coast. This type of pattern is commonly associated with reconnaissance and maritime domain awareness missions, crucial for monitoring naval movements, detecting submarines, and gathering intelligence. The presence of the Poseidon in this region suggests ongoing surveillance in support of naval drills or other operational deployments.

Simultaneously, a Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker, with the callsign “DECEE11,” was tracked refueling aircraft over the Ionian Sea. Aerial refueling is a key logistical component in extended operations, allowing fighter jets and reconnaissance planes to sustain long-duration missions over the Mediterranean. The KC-135R’s operations in the vicinity of Greece align with NATO’s broader presence in the region and could support assets participating in multinational training activities.

The “Mare Aperto 2025” exercise, scheduled from March 26 to April 18, is a training event aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of the Italian Navy and its allied forces. This year’s edition will involve over 6000 personnel, including elements from eight NATO and EU nations, covering a vast maritime area stretching from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the central Mediterranean and the waters around Crete.
