Today, the skies over the Central and Eastern Mediterranean are witnessing heightened surveillance activity, with both Italian and Greek military aircraft conducting separate intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
An Italian Air Force ATR P-72A (reg. MM62280, callsign IAM4101) took off from NAS Sigonella earlier today and is currently operating over the central Mediterranean. The aircraft’s route suggests it may extend its mission further south, potentially reaching the waters off eastern Libya. These long-endurance patrols are typically aimed at maritime surveillance, with a focus on monitoring illegal trafficking, irregular migration routes, or supporting multinational maritime security operations in the region.
Meanwhile, a Hellenic Air Force Embraer EMB-145H AEW&C (reg. 757, callsign OURAN41) departed from Elefsis Air Base and is operating within Greek FIR airspace, south of Crete. The pattern of its flight suggests involvement in an extended surveillance or early warning mission, possibly in support of Operation IRINI—the EU-led initiative tasked with enforcing the UN arms embargo on Libya. Alternatively, the sortie could be connected to NATO air policing or maritime situational awareness activities in the eastern Mediterranean.
