Today two US Navy surveillance aircraft took off from NAS Sigonella, Sicily, for long-endurance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions over the Mediterranean.
A Boeing P-8A operated a wide-ranging mission over the central and eastern portions of the sea. After departure, the high-altitude drone headed east, conducting a series of orbits off the coasts of Lebanon, Syria, and Cyprus—an area of growing strategic interest, particularly in light of recent tensions and Russian naval activities in the eastern Mediterranean.
Meanwhile, a Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton (registration 169804) carried out an extended mission further west. After departure, the aircraft proceeded south towards the Libyan coastline, where it performed numerous surveillance orbits both off Tripoli and near the Gulf of Sidra.
