Today, surveillance operations intensified over the western Black Sea region, with both RAF and US Navy assets actively involved.
A Royal Air Force Boeing RC-135W (registration ZZ665 – callsign RRR7224) has been conducting a long reconnaissance mission over the Romanian coast and adjacent airspace over the Black Sea. The aircraft, which took off from RAF Waddington, performed multiple orbits near the border with Ukraine and the maritime area off Odesa and the Danube delta—an area of strategic importance due to its proximity to the ongoing conflict.
Supporting the surveillance operation, a US Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon also entered the area after flying north over the Aegean and Bulgaria. Although its registration is not currently available, the Poseidon is well-known for its maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Its presence over the western Black Sea underlines the continued attention the US is paying to this key region.
The coordinated deployment of RAF and US Navy reconnaissance assets is a clear signal of NATO’s ongoing monitoring efforts in response to the war in Ukraine. As tensions remain high, especially around southern Ukraine and Crimea, such missions provide critical intelligence and situational awareness to allied forces.
These surveillance flights are becoming increasingly frequent and are likely to continue as the security situation in the Black Sea region evolves.
