Unusual Black Sea mission for the US Army’s Artemis

We are used to seeing the US Army Bombardier Challenger 650 Artemis (reg. N488CR – c/s BRIO68) operating both along NATO’s eastern flank and off the coast of Libya. In the first scenario, the aircraft often conducts SIGINT (signals intelligence) missions near the borders of Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine.

It’s the first time we are tracking it performing this type of mission (although it should be, in absolute terms, the third time it has ever done so).

After taking off from its usual base in Constanta, Romania, the aircraft headed east over the Black Sea and is currently conducting an extended SIGINT sortie reaching into the eastern part of the basin.

While the aircraft remains within the FIR boundaries of NATO members (Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey), it is the first time we have tracked this asset flying such a route. Until now, similar missions over the Black Sea have typically been carried out by USAF RC-135s, RAF aircraft, or French Mirage and Rafale fighters equipped for electronic intelligence.

About Artemis:
The Bombardier 650 Artemis is a highly modified business jet operated by the US Army for strategic signals intelligence gathering. Outfitted with an advanced sensor suite, the aircraft is capable of detecting, intercepting, and analyzing a wide array of electronic emissions, contributing to real-time situational awareness and threat assessment.
