This morning, a United States Air Force Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint (registration 62-4132) carried out a new signals intelligence (SIGINT) mission over the eastern Mediterranean, with a particular focus on the airspace off the coasts of Lebanon and Syria.
The aircraft, which took off from Souda Bay Air Base in Crete, followed a direct route across the Mediterranean before beginning an orbiting pattern near the Lebanese coast, just west of Beirut. The RC-135W operated in international airspace, carefully avoiding intrusion into Lebanese or Syrian airspace while still maintaining a favorable position to intercept and collect electronic signals from within the region.
This area has long been a hotspot for intelligence-gathering activities, due to the ongoing instability in Syria, the presence of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, and increased regional tensions involving Israel. Missions of this kind are routinely conducted by both US and NATO aircraft to monitor military communications, radar emissions, and other electronic signals.
The RC-135W Rivet Joint, operated by the 55th Wing based at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, is one of the USAF’s most advanced airborne intelligence platforms, capable of providing real-time analysis and relay of gathered data to command centers.
The continued presence of such missions underscores the strategic importance of the eastern Mediterranean and the persistent monitoring of developments in the Levant region.
