Thoday, an Italian Air Force Gulfstream G550 CAEW (reg. MM62303, c/s IAM1495) carried out an extended surveillance mission over eastern Romania, near the border with Ukraine and the Black Sea.
The aircraft, equipped with advanced airborne early warning and control systems, operated for several hours in a racetrack pattern over the region between Tulcea, Brăila, and Constanța. These types of missions are typically aimed at monitoring air traffic, gathering intelligence, and providing situational awareness to NATO forces in the area.
Although the Italian CAEW did not enter Ukrainian or international airspace over the Black Sea, its operational area allowed it to cover strategic zones including southern Ukraine, the Danube Delta, and portions of the northwestern Black Sea—regions of high interest given the ongoing war in Ukraine and the presence of Russian forces in Crimea.
This mission is part of Italy’s continued contribution to NATO’s enhanced presence along the eastern flank, reinforcing airspace monitoring efforts and ensuring collective security.
