On July 19, the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) of the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) entered the Mediterranean Sea (full report here).
We have been able to track the group’s progress through the “clues” it leaves behind—specifically, the movements of C-2A Greyhounds, helicopters, and refueling aircraft.
The USS Ford continued its eastward route, transiting south of Sardinia before entering the Strait of Sicily.
On July 22, the carrier sailed through the Ionian Sea, initially heading north, then turning south again before resuming its course toward the Strait of Otranto.
As of now, the CSG is operating in the southern Adriatic Sea—an area where it also operated extensively two years ago to allow air operations over the Black Sea region.
In the coming days, we will monitor whether the CSG remains in the area or proceeds elsewhere.
