Russian flotilla on the move in the Mediterranean: “Syrian Express”, submarines, and NATO surveillance

Russian military naval traffic in the Mediterranean is once again in the spotlight, with a series of movements and radar tracks revealing a particularly active and diverse operational picture.

A U.S. Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon carried out a patrol mission between the eastern and central Mediterranean, flying along routes that match those of the Russian “Syrian Express” flotilla. As previously reported, this formation includes the Boikiy corvette, which is escorting two Russian logistics vessels: the Sparta IV cargo ship and the General Skobelevtanker, both of which departed Syria and are now heading back to Russia. The Boikiy was tracked yesterday maneuvering southeast of Crete, likely conducting a refueling operation at sea.

But that’s not the only development. In the central Mediterranean, the Sergey Gebrelsky ocean-going tug has reappeared. The vessel entered the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar a few weeks ago, accompanying the Novorossiysk, a Kilo-class Russian submarine. The presence of the Gebrelsky suggests that the submarine is still operating in the region, although it is not currently trackable by public AIS.

Another unidentified naval activity has been observed between Cyprus and Israel, possibly involving another Russian unit—likely the Novorossiysk itself or another support vessel—based on unusual movements detected in the area.

This broad operational picture confirms the high level of Russian naval activity across multiple vectors:

  • the “Syrian Express” logistical bridge between Syria and Russia,
  • the deployment of at least one conventional submarine with a support ship,
  • continuous surveillance by NATO assets, such as today’s U.S. Navy Poseidon mission.

Amid ongoing global tensions, the Mediterranean remains a strategic theater where major powers assert their presence and monitor each other closely.

  • I would love for trump to bomb russia specially Mr bully thinks he can get away with it

  • Let’s have a war with Americans bullys can strike every country without nuclear weapons but let’s try Mr Trump to fuck with country that has more than you genocide Joe’s

  • I think the Russians are playing games, they want to be seen out there, its a distraction away from the Ukraine. They have proved over and over the fact they have a substantial arsenal at their disposal. The truth is, they don’t have the brains to utilise what they have in a military sense. Mr Putin is trying to hold onto his position and as a result ” needs to be seen doing something ” 😳 Nato are monitoring his presence and will continue doing so.
