At least 27 migrants lost their lives yesterday in a double shipwreck south of Lampedusa. The two boats, both departed from Libya with around 100 people on board, capsized during the crossing.

Search and rescue operations were coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Palermo of the Italian Coast Guard. The naval assets involved included:

  • Coast Guard patrol boats CP 324 and CP 327
  • Two Guardia di Finanza patrol boats
  • Romanian naval unit operating under Frontex

According to survivors, between 20 and 30 people remain missing.

This afternoon, aerial surveillance in the area was carried out by a Leonardo PH-139D helicopter (reg. MM81997) of the Guardia di Finanza and an ATR-42MP (reg. MM62170) of the Italian Coast Guard.

In the early afternoon, an Italian Air Force P-72A had also operated in the area.
