A busy day of aerial surveillance in the Baltic region.
This morning, a Swedish Air Force Gulfstream S102B “Korpen” (reg. 102002) carried out an electronic reconnaissance mission along the Russian borders, particularly in front of St. Petersburg and over Estonia and Latvia.
At the same time, an Italian Air Force Gulfstream E.550 CAEW (reg. MM62293, callsign IAM1495) operated in Lithuanian airspace, orbiting close to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
The Italian aircraft had arrived in Estonia on August 20, in support of NATO’s surveillance and air defense operations in the Baltic area.
The deployment of the Italian CAEW is part of a broader national contribution: the Italian Air Force is also operating four F-35A fighters from Estonia within the framework of the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, tasked with safeguarding Allied airspace and responding to possible Russian incursions.
These missions, carried out in coordination with NATO allies, have a clear strategic value: strengthening deterrence on the Alliance’s eastern flank and closely monitoring Russian military activity both around St. Petersburg and in the heavily militarized region of Kaliningrad.
