After just a few weeks of deployment, it appears that the presence of the Russian submarine Novorossky in the eastern Mediterranean — and likely in the entire basin — has come to an end.
For the past four days, the tug Jakob Grebelsky (MB-119) has been tracked sailing westward after departing the waters off Alexandria, Egypt, on August 29. The tug is currently accompanying the submarine Novorossky, which has relied on it as a mobile support base. Since Russia’s withdrawal from Syria, the Russian Navy no longer maintains any permanent facilities in the region.
At the moment, the pair of Russian vessels is located in the central Mediterranean and is moving northwest at a speed of 11–15 knots. If they maintain this course and speed, they are expected to pass through the Strait of Sicily late tomorrow.
