Today we tracked a long surveillance mission carried out by a US Navy Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton (reg. 169660, c/s BLKCAT6) that took off from NAS Sigonella.
The unmanned aircraft, the naval variant of the RQ-4 Global Hawk, flew extensively along the Libyan coastline, focusing on the areas of Tripoli, Misrata, and Benghazi, before heading back to Sicily.
The Triton, with its long endurance and advanced onboard sensors, is a key asset for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations in the Mediterranean. The increasing presence of these drones off the Libyan coast is linked to the country’s ongoing instability and to the US strategic interest in monitoring both maritime traffic and military activities in the region.
This is not the first time: in recent months we have recorded a growing number of MQ-4C missions over the central and eastern Mediterranean, confirming the crucial role of Sigonella as a hub for NATO and US ISR operations.
