This morning, two Italian Air Force aircraft were tracked on mission in Iraqi airspace, in the area north of Baghdad and between Erbil and Mosul.

The first was a Leonardo EC-27J “Jedi” (reg. MM62224), specialized in electronic warfare and enemy communications jamming. The aircraft operated in northern Iraq, close to the Syrian border.

At the same time, a Boeing KC-767A (reg. MM62229) was also active, employed as a tanker to provide aerial refueling support and extend the operational endurance of coalition assets. The aircraft performed several refueling circuits in the Tikrit area, north of Baghdad.

The simultaneous presence of these two assets highlights Italy’s ongoing contribution to international missions in the Middle East, particularly within Operation Inherent Resolve against the remaining pockets of the Islamic State.
