The Russian Navy submarine Novorossiisk, accompanied by the tug Iakov Grebelskii, has arrived in the port of Algiers as part of the ongoing military cooperation between Algeria and Russia. The two units, belonging respectively to the Black Sea and Baltic Fleets, will remain docked in Algeria until September 18, 2025.
Over the past weeks, ItaMilRadar tracked the voyage of the submarine, which first appeared in the Eastern Mediterranean before crossing into the central basin and finally reaching North Africa.
The Novorossiisk is a Project 636.3 (Improved Kilo-class) diesel-electric submarine, one of the most modern non-nuclear submarines in the Russian Navy, capable of carrying Kalibr cruise missiles. Its presence in the Mediterranean, along with the support vessel Iakov Grebelskii, highlights Moscow’s efforts to maintain and expand its naval footprint in the region, while also deepening ties with Algeria, a long-standing partner of Russia in North Africa.
This visit is part of a broader framework of military-technical cooperation between Algiers and Moscow, which includes joint exercises, training programs, and arms supply.
