This morning a US Navy Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton (registration 169660, callsign “BLACKCAT5”) took off from NAS Sigonella (Sicily) for a long-endurance surveillance mission over the central Mediterranean.
After departing from eastern Sicily, the unmanned aircraft flew south towards the Libyan coast, where it has been operating intensively in the area off Tripoli. According to available tracking data, the MQ-4C has been on station for almost 10 hours, conducting persistent monitoring operations.
These types of missions are part of the routine surveillance activity carried out by US Navy assets in the region, with particular focus on the situation in Libya and the central Mediterranean Sea. The MQ-4C, derived from the Global Hawk platform, is capable of extremely long sorties, making it a key asset for maritime domain awareness.
