A Hellenic Air Force Embraer EMB-145H AEW&C (reg. 729) took off this morning from Elefsis Air Base, near Athens, for a surveillance mission over the Central Mediterranean Sea in support of EUNAVFOR MED IRINI operation.
The aircraft, using callsign HAF380, flew south across the Aegean Sea and Crete before reaching the patrol area north of the Libyan coast.
In this area, the Greek AEW&C is conducting air and maritime surveillance, providing intelligence and coordination support to naval and air assets operating within the European mission.
Operation IRINI, launched by the European Union in March 2020, aims to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya, monitor illegal oil exports, and enhance maritime security in the region.
The regular deployment of Greek AEW&C aircraft represents a key contribution to the European Union’s situational awareness and intelligence-sharing efforts in the Central Mediterranean.
