A United States Air Force Boeing RC-135U Combat Sent (registration 64-14847, callsign JAKE37) was tracked yesterday returning to the United Kingdom after a long intelligence-gathering mission over the Black Sea.
The aircraft, which had departed earlier in the day, operated for several hours in the area before beginning its flight back to RAF Mildenhall. The RC-135U is one of the most specialized variants of the Rivet Joint family, designed to collect and analyze radar emissions, providing detailed electronic intelligence (ELINT) on enemy air defense systems and radar networks.
This kind of mission is a routine activity in the region, aimed at monitoring military developments and radar activity in the wider Black Sea area, particularly in light of ongoing tensions and the continued presence of U.S. and NATO surveillance assets in Eastern Europe.
This sortie further confirms the steady pace of U.S. reconnaissance operations from bases in the United Kingdom toward the Black Sea theatre, part of the broader effort to maintain situational awareness along NATO’s eastern flank.
