Russian An-124 departs Latakia, heading towards Central/Western Africa

Earlier today, a Russian Air Force Antonov An-124-100 Ruslan (registration RA-82030, callsign RFF403) departed from Latakia Air Base in Syria, heading southwest across the eastern Mediterranean. The heavy transport aircraft appears to be en route to Central or Western Africa, though its final destination remains unknown at this stage.

The route taken by the Ruslan is particularly noteworthy. To reach Syria, the aircraft used Turkish airspace — an interesting detail, considering Turkey is a NATO member and that Russian military flights through its airspace have become increasingly rare since the start of the war in Ukraine.

Even more significant is the fact that the aircraft departed from Latakia. Officially, Russian military forces were said to have withdrawn from Syria earlier this year, yet flights like this one suggest that Russia continues to maintain at least limited access to the base, possibly for logistical or transit purposes connected to its African operations.

The An-124’s current route over the Mediterranean, pointing towards Africa, may be part of Moscow’s growing efforts to sustain its network of military and political ties across the continent, from Libya to the Sahel region.
