This time for real: the USS Ford Carrier Strike Group is leaving the Mediterranean

After several days of uncertainty, it now seems clear that the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) and her Carrier Strike Group are finally heading west, leaving the Mediterranean Sea.

According to available tracking data, at least one of the support vessels of the group, the fast combat support ship USNS Supply (T-AOE-6), has already passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the Atlantic Ocean in the last few hours. This movement strongly suggests that the rest of the group is following the same route.

The Gerald R. Ford herself is currently sailing westward at a steady speed of around 14 knots, which confirms that the long-anticipated redeployment towards the western Atlantic is now underway.

The CSG had been operating for several days in the Ionian Sea, where the carrier’s activity had raised questions about a possible delay or even a change in plans regarding her expected transfer towards the Caribbean.
