A U.S. Army Bombardier ARTEMIS II (reg. N159L – callsign BRI066) was tracked today operating over the central Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Libya.
The aircraft departed from Romania, flying south over Greece before entering the central Mediterranean, where it carried out a long surveillance orbit west of Tripoli.
ARTEMIS (Airborne Reconnaissance and Targeting Multi-Mission Intelligence System) aircraft are used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. They are equipped with advanced sensors and electronic intelligence equipment, allowing them to monitor ground activity, communications, and radar emissions.
This marks another mission for the U.S. Army’s specialized ARTEMIS platform over North Africa — an area of increasing strategic attention due to the complex political and military situation in Libya and the growing presence of Russian mercenary forces in the region.
