Italian Navy and Air Force joint mission over the Adriatic Sea

Yesterday evening an interesting operation took place over the central Adriatic Sea involving both Italian Navy and Air Force assets.

An Italian Navy EH-101A Merlin (MM81634 – callsign SHARK19) operated off the coast of Abruzzo, flying an intense pattern typical of maritime patrol or training missions aimed at detecting underwater threats.

Supporting the helicopter was an Italian Air Force ATR P-72A MPA (MM62280 – callsign IAM4102), which departed from Sigonella and orbited the same area before returning southbound.

The combination of these two aircraft types – the EH-101A Merlin and the P-72A – allows Italy to perform highly effective maritime surveillance and anti-submarine operations, integrating airborne sensors, radar, and sonar capabilities.
