Today a US Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon took off from NAS Sigonella (Sicily) for a long-range maritime patrol mission over the Black Sea.
After crossing Greece and Bulgaria, the aircraft entered the Black Sea area, where it carried out an extensive surveillance pattern both over the western and the eastern sectors of the sea, operating also off the Russian naval base of Novorossiysk.
These missions, regularly performed by US and NATO maritime patrol aircraft, aim to monitor Russian naval movements and other military activities in one of the most strategic areas of the region.
The P-8A Poseidon, derived from the Boeing 737 platform, is the US Navy’s primary maritime patrol aircraft, specialized in anti-submarine warfare (ASW), surface surveillance, and intelligence gathering.
