Three U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bombers arrived yesterday evening at Morón Air Base, in southern Spain, around 18:40 local time. The aircraft, part of the 2nd Bomb Wing based at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, crossed the Atlantic under the callsign “CAGER11/12/13,” marking the beginning of a new Bomber Task Force (BTF) deployment in Europe.
The three bombers departed from Barksdale in the morning. During their transatlantic flight, they were intercepted by Portuguese Air Force fighters in the Lisbon FIR, as reported by spotters monitoring air-to-air communications. The formation proceeded south toward Spain, landing at Morón AB, which has long served as a forward base for U.S. Air Force strategic aircraft in Europe.
This rotation forms part of the ongoing Bomber Task Force Europe 26-1 mission. The U.S. Air Force describes these periodic deployments as opportunities to improve readiness, strengthen coordination with NATO allies, and demonstrate the flexibility of U.S. global strike capabilities.
Morón AB’s strategic location, a few hours’ flight from most European and Mediterranean theatres, makes it an ideal hub for this kind of mission. From there, the bombers can operate toward northern Europe, the Baltic region, or the eastern Mediterranean, supporting deterrence and joint training goals within NATO’s framework.
The arrival of the B-52s also underlines Washington’s commitment to maintaining a visible and credible long-range bomber presence in Europe. Beyond the operational training value, these missions serve as a tangible message of reassurance to allies and a reminder of the United States’ ability to project strategic air power anywhere in the world at short notice.
The three Stratofortress aircraft are expected to remain in Spain for the next several weeks, conducting a mix of bilateral and multilateral missions before returning to the United States. Their deployment once again highlights the enduring importance of the transatlantic partnership and the key role of Morón Air Base in the U.S.–NATO strategic architecture.
