A US Navy P-8A Poseidon carried out an extensive ISR mission over the Black Sea today after taking off from NAS Sigonella.
Once inside the Black Sea, the aircraft initially operated off the Bulgarian coast, flying a series of patterns near Varna, an area frequently used by NATO maritime patrol assets. The Poseidon then continued eastward along a route that brought it toward the central basin of the Black Sea, following a track clearly oriented toward Novorossiysk. The Russian port, the main naval hub on the Black Sea, has been under close scrutiny in recent months following repeated Ukrainian attacks.
In the final phase of the mission, the aircraft performed a large and unusual holding pattern southwest of the traditional operating areas. This broad orbit stands out, as it is not commonly seen in this part of the Black Sea and suggests focused attention on maritime activity in that sector before the Poseidon turned back toward the Mediterranean.
Although the aircraft remained at all times over international waters, today’s mission combined both routine surveillance tracks and uncommon manoeuvres, reflecting NATO’s continued effort to maintain situational awareness over a strategically volatile region.
