Earlier today, a Japanese Fuji UH-1J helicopter operating under UNFICYP, and flying as UN024, carried out an extended patrol mission over the southern sector of Cyprus.
The aircraft, a UH-1J registered 41842, is part of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force contingent supporting UN peacekeeping operations on the island. Its activity was focused mainly between Nicosia and Larnaca, where the helicopter flew multiple racetrack patterns typical of observation and liaison missions.
Japanese military flights are relatively rare in Europe, making these patrol missions particularly notable. Within UNFICYP, however, Japanese UH-1J helicopters represent a key asset for mobility, surveillance, and support along the buffer zone, regularly conducting reconnaissance and transport tasks.
Today’s route shows the aircraft operating south of the Green Line, with repeated passes near Larnaca before heading back toward Nicosia, consistent with routine UN monitoring operations.
