A US Navy P-8A conducted a long-endurance surveillance mission over the Black Sea this afternoon, but only after performing an air-to-air refuelling operation over Romania. The aircraft, having departed from NAS Sigonella, first headed north toward the Romanian airspace, where it met a tanker to carry out an AAR session that extended its on-station endurance.
Following refuelling, the Poseidon continued east and entered its operational area over the western Black Sea, where it flew a series of racetrack patterns off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria. It then proceeded further east for an additional set of orbits over the central sector of the Black Sea.
These flight patterns are typical of signals intelligence missions, especially in a region that remains one of the most sensitive areas of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
After completing its mission, the aircraft retraced its route southbound, eventually heading back toward the central Mediterranean.
This sortie adds to the continuous US and NATO activity over the area, with regular P-8A and other ISR platforms maintaining persistent situational awareness across the region.
