Today, an Italian Air Force Gulfstream E.550 CAEW and a US Navy P-8A Poseidon were tracked operating simultaneously over the Black Sea, highlighting close coordination between NATO airborne surveillance assets in one of the Alliance’s most sensitive regions. The activity took place in international airspace, at a time when the basin has returned to the centre of attention following recent Russian and Ukrainian actions.

The Italian E.550 CAEW, callsign PERSEO70, operated close to the Romanian coastline, repeatedly orbiting near Constanța. From this forward position, the aircraft provided wide-area air and surface surveillance, acting as an airborne command-and-control node along NATO’s eastern flank. The choice of operating area underlines the need for persistent situational awareness close to Alliance territory.

At the same time, a US Navy P-8A Poseidon conducted a long-duration mission covering a large portion of the Black Sea. Initially operating over the western sector, the aircraft later extended its activity eastwards, flying deep into the basin. The overall flight profile is consistent with a broad intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission aimed at building a comprehensive maritime picture rather than focusing on a single area.

This wider coverage is particularly relevant in the current phase of the conflict. In recent days, Russian naval activity has appeared more cautious, especially in the eastern Black Sea, following Ukrainian strikes against military infrastructure and naval targets. By operating across both western and eastern sectors, the P-8A was likely tasked with monitoring surface movements, changes in posture, and possible redeployments.

What stands out in today’s activity is the complementary nature of the two missions. While the P-8A focused on basin-wide maritime surveillance, the Italian CAEW provided an airborne command layer closer to NATO territory, enhancing coordination and information sharing among allied forces.

Italy’s continued use of its CAEW fleet in the Black Sea region sends a clear signal of commitment to NATO’s eastern flank, while the persistent presence of US Navy Poseidons confirms their central role in monitoring Russian naval activity. In a theatre where intelligence and early warning are decisive, missions like today’s quietly shape the balance by ensuring constant visibility and pressure, even without overt escalation.
