Today, over the Eastern Mediterranean, the Hellenic Air Force has once again deployed one of its Embraer ERJ-145H AEW&C aircraft on a wide-area surveillance mission, while an accompanying flight by a C-27J Spartan has drawn particular attention for the role it appears to have performed. The combination highlights how Greece continues to experiment with flexible ISR and maritime awareness solutions in a region that remains strategically sensitive.
The AEW&C mission itself follows a pattern observed repeatedly in recent days. Operating from mainland Greece, the ERJ-145H conducted a long racetrack pattern over international waters south of the Aegean, extending its coverage toward Crete and the broader Eastern Mediterranean. These flights, increasingly frequent even outside peak tension phases, underline Athens’ focus on maintaining persistent air and maritime domain awareness amid regional instability.
More interesting, however, is the parallel activity of a Hellenic Air Force C-27J Spartan. The aircraft flew extended legs over open sea, tracing patterns that closely resemble maritime patrol or surface surveillance profiles. This is, at least on paper, an unconventional tasking for the C-27J, a tactical transport aircraft primarily designed for airlift, logistics, and short-field operations.
That said, this was not an isolated or unprecedented case. In recent years, similar C-27J missions have been tracked several times in the same area, suggesting that while such tasking remains relatively rare, it is not exceptional. The Hellenic Air Force has previously used the Spartan for secondary roles, including surveillance, coordination, and support missions, especially when more specialized assets are limited or already committed elsewhere.
The likely explanation lies in operational pragmatism. Equipped with modern avionics and capable of long endurance at medium altitude, the C-27J can provide a basic level of maritime situational awareness, act as a communications relay, or support broader ISR packages coordinated with AEW&C platforms. In this context, its presence alongside the ERJ-145H today points to an integrated approach rather than an ad hoc improvisation.
Strategically, the significance is twofold. First, it confirms that Greece is willing to stretch the employment of its existing fleet to maintain continuous coverage over key maritime corridors. Second, it suggests an ongoing effort to refine layered surveillance concepts in the Eastern Mediterranean, where air, sea, and information domains increasingly overlap.
Taken together, today’s flights reinforce a clear message: even assets not traditionally associated with maritime patrol are being folded into Greece’s wider surveillance posture, providing redundancy and flexibility in a region where awareness itself has become a strategic asset.
