Following the brief and fragile weekend pause, the night saw Russian forces resume bombardments against Ukrainian urban areas. This renewed kinetic activity was quickly mirrored in the air, with a noticeable reactivation of NATO and US intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets across both the eastern flank and the Black Sea region.
A NATO E-3A Sentry operating under the MAGICS callsign deployed from Trapani and conducted a long mission over eastern Poland. From this position, the aircraft was ideally placed to monitor air activity and command-and-control dynamics linked to operations inside Ukraine, while remaining well within NATO airspace. Such missions are not limited to passive observation: the E-3 provides a real-time air picture, tracks aircraft and missile activity, and acts as a key node in allied situational awareness during periods of heightened tension.
At the same time, a USAF RQ-4B Global Hawk operating as FORTE returned to the Black Sea area, marking its first clearly task-relevant appearance in weeks. FORTE missions over the Black Sea had recently become less frequent, reflecting a temporary reduction in visible escalation. Its return today is therefore significant, suggesting that the renewed Russian strikes were immediately assessed as more than a one-off event.
The combination of these two assets is particularly telling. While FORTE focuses on persistent, wide-area surveillance over the southern axis — monitoring coastal regions, air defence systems and operational patterns — the E-3 complements this by providing a dynamic air picture closer to the eastern NATO border. Together, they cover both the strategic depth and the immediate airspace context of the conflict.
Timing is crucial. The near-simultaneous activation of the E-3 from Italy and FORTE over the Black Sea strongly indicates that the weekend truce was always considered temporary. NATO’s ISR posture appears to have been ready to scale up rapidly, anticipating a resumption of hostilities rather than reacting to a surprise escalation.
In this sense, today’s flights are less about individual missions and more about posture. As Russian strikes resumed, NATO restored a familiar but meaningful surveillance pattern, signalling sustained attention and readiness to closely monitor developments across the Ukrainian theatre from multiple directions.
