Indonesia is moving ahead with the M-346FA (Fighter Attack) through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI), marking an important step toward the future acquisition of the Italian aircraft for advanced pilot training and light combat roles.
Developed by Leonardo, the M-346FA is the most capable evolution of the M-346 family, combining a modern digital cockpit, advanced embedded training systems and real operational capability. Designed to bridge the gap between basic jet trainers and frontline fighters, it allows pilots to prepare for 4th- and 5th-generation aircraft while keeping operating costs under control.
In its FA configuration, the aircraft can also employ air-to-air missiles, precision-guided munitions and self-protection systems, enabling missions such as light attack, close air support and air policing. For Indonesia, the LoI reflects a pragmatic and flexible approach to air power, centred on a single platform able to support both training and operational needs, with lower life-cycle costs than high-end fighters and the added value of local maintenance, training and industrial cooperation.
The move further strengthens the M-346’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region and signals Jakarta’s intent to modernise its air force through a balanced, sustainable and cost-effective solution, while final contract details and aircraft numbers remain to be defined.
