Six Vermont Air National Guard F-35A fighters relocated today from RAF Lakenheath in the UK to Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, marking a significant shift in their deployment profile just days after crossing the Atlantic. The move signals a potential reinforcement of US air power posture in the Levant at a time of persistent regional volatility.
Earlier this week, the six “VT” F-35As arrived at RAF Lakenheath as part of Coronet East 035, supported by three Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers (GOLD 81, 82 and 83). This morning, the same tankers escorted the fighters southbound across Europe and the Mediterranean toward Jordan.
The formation consisted of three cells:
– TABOR 41/42 (18-5336 / 18-5344) with GOLD 81
– TABOR 45/46 (18-5338 / 18-5358) with GOLD 83
– TABOR 43/44 (17-5280 / 17-5239) with GOLD 82
The aircraft originate from the Vermont Air National Guard’s 158th Fighter Wing at Burlington ANGB. Notably, six additional Vermont F-35As remain at Morón Air Base in Spain after the transatlantic crossing.
A Rapid Shift South
The redeployment from the UK to Jordan represents more than a routine repositioning.
The timing is particularly relevant. In recent days, the regional security environment has remained fluid, with ongoing instability in Syria and heightened tensions across the Middle East. Moving fifth-generation assets closer to the theater increases deterrence credibility while maintaining ambiguity about their intended mission set.
Whether this marks the start of a longer-term presence in Jordan or a short-duration surge remains unclear.
Deterrence Signaling and Operational Flexibility
The use of three dedicated KC-135 tankers for both the Atlantic crossing and the subsequent leg to Jordan highlights the self-contained nature of the deployment package. This is a mobile, scalable force element capable of shifting theaters rapidly without relying on permanent basing changes.
From a strategic perspective, positioning F-35As in Jordan strengthens US ability to conduct air dominance missions, precision strikes, and ISR operations while integrating with regional partners. It also reinforces reassurance messaging toward allies concerned about escalation dynamics.
In the coming days, attention will focus on whether additional US assets follow southbound from Europe or whether the Jordan deployment stabilizes at this level. If sustained, today’s move could signal a recalibration of US forward air posture in response to evolving regional threats.
