An Italian Air Force Gulfstream E550 CAEW (reg. MM62303) is operating today over southeastern Romania and the western Black Sea, departing from Pratica di Mare AB in Italy.

The aircraft, callsign IAM1495, is conducting airborne early warning and ISR activity near Bucharest without forward deployment. The significance lies in Italy’s ability to project persistent surveillance on NATO’s eastern flank while remaining based on national territory.

Since the early months of the conflict, Italy has repeatedly projected its CAEW fleet toward the Black Sea on a mission-by-mission basis. This approach provides continuity without requiring infrastructure buildup abroad.

What the CAEW Brings to the Black Sea

The Italian G550 CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) is far more than a surveillance jet. Equipped with advanced AESA radar arrays mounted along the fuselage, it provides 360-degree detection of airborne and surface targets at long range.

From Romanian airspace, the platform can monitor aircraft movements over the western Black Sea, track naval units, and detect missile launches originating from Crimea or occupied territories. Unlike traditional AWACS aircraft, the CAEW combines radar surveillance with signals intelligence and command-and-control functions in a compact, highly mobile airframe.

Its role is not only to see, but to coordinate.

The aircraft can function as an airborne battle management node, linking fighters, ground-based air defense systems, and naval units into a shared operational picture. Data collected onboard can be transmitted in near real time to NATO command structures, improving reaction time across southeastern Europe. In a high-tension environment, seconds matter.
