At 1400z on 16 February, eighteen F-35A Lightning II of the 495th Fighter Squadron at RAF Lakenheath departed for the Middle East, supported by a significant tanker package from RAF Mildenhall. The aircraft moved in coordinated three-ship cells, creating one of the largest single F-35 deployments seen in recent months. The scale of the package points directly to the current US force posture linked to tensions with Iran.

Seven KC-135 Stratotankers using LAGER callsigns supported the fighter movement:

– 60-0324 LAGER 16
– 61-0315 LAGER 15
– 62-3540 LAGER 14
– 59-1470 LAGER 13
– 59-1475 LAGER 11
– 59-1464 LAGER 10

The F-35A package included:

VALKYRIE 01-03 (20-5570 / 20-5618 / 19-5487) with LAGER 10
– VALKYRIE 04-06 (19-5473 / 19-5475 / 19-5484) with LAGER 11
– VALKYRIE 07-08 (19-5476 / 19-5495) with LAGER 17
– GREEN 04-06 (20-5615 / 20-5571 / 20-5600) with LAGER 14
– GREEN 01-03 (20-5589 / 19-5473 / 20-5581) with LAGER 13
– GREEN 07-09 (20-5605 / 20-5590 / 20-5597) with LAGER 15
plus VALKYRIE 09

The jets departed in cells of three, a structure that maximizes efficiency and operational coherence during long-range transit. Only VALKYRIE 09 initially remained behind, awaiting the departure of an additional tanker before proceeding.

Forward staging in Crete

The LAGER tankers are not flying simple round trips. Instead, they are landing at Chania, creating a forward refueling node in the Eastern Mediterranean. LAGER 16 diverted to Ramstein independently.

Additionally, two KC-135s from MacDill AFB deployed to Chania:

64-14832 REACH 465
– 59-1478 REACH 128

This forward tanker positioning suggests that the movement is designed to sustain operations beyond the initial transit phase.

Why this matters

Eighteen “LN” tailcoded F-35A represent the bulk of a frontline USAF squadron. In recent months, deployments of this size have been rare. The scale alone makes this one of the most significant Lightning II movements from Europe in recent times.

This is a US Air Force operation. It is not a NATO mission. The context is clearly linked to the current situation involving Iran and the broader regional security environment.

Moving such a large stealth package provides Washington with immediate flexible strike, deterrence, and escalation-control options. Whether this is a short-term surge or the beginning of a more sustained presence remains unclear.

In the coming days, the behavior of the tanker bridge and any additional follow-on movements will indicate whether this was a rapid reinforcement or the start of a longer build-up tied to developments around Iran.
