A Russian fishing vessel operating from the country’s northern fleet has been observed transiting the Central Mediterranean, currently proceeding eastbound south of Malta toward the Eastern Mediterranean.

The vessel, PORONAI (IMO 9311919), departed from Murmansk, Russia, in late January and has since conducted a long-range transit across the North Atlantic before entering the Mediterranean. According to AIS data, the vessel is currently reporting Port Said, Egypt, as its destination. As commonly observed, AIS-reported destinations do not always reflect the vessel’s final operational area and may change during transit.

AIS data indicates also that the vessel has remained in international waters throughout its transit, avoiding entry into the territorial waters of coastal states, including Italy

Long-range deployment from northern Russia

PORONAI is a Russian-flagged ocean-going fishing vessel designed for distant-water operations. Vessels of this type routinely conduct extended deployments far from their home ports, with Murmansk serving as one of Russia’s primary hubs for long-range fishing fleets.

Such vessels are capable of remaining at sea for prolonged periods and operating across vast maritime regions, including the North Atlantic and beyond.

Increased scrutiny on Russian fishing fleets

In recent years, Russian fishing vessels have drawn increased attention from maritime analysts and Western authorities. A report published by maritime intelligence firm Windward highlighted how certain vessels associated with Murmansk-based fleets have operated in proximity to sensitive maritime infrastructure, including subsea communications cables and energy pipelines.

PORONAI route

Due to their endurance, mobility, and civilian status, fishing vessels can maintain persistent presence in strategic maritime areas. While these characteristics are inherent to distant-water fishing operations, they have contributed to increased monitoring of such vessels in the current security environment.

There is no indication that PORONAI itself is engaged in any activity beyond routine transit.
