In recent hours several European naval units have deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean to help defend Cyprus from the growing threat posed by Iranian drones and missiles. French and Greek warships are now operating around the island as part of a defensive posture, while the German frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen remains off Lebanon under the UNIFIL mission. At the same time, the U.S. carrier strike group centered on USS Gerald R. Ford is actively involved in operations against Iran and in the defense of Israel.
European Ships Reinforce Cyprus Defense
Following the escalation in recent days, several European naval assets have been officially tasked with contributing to the defense of Cyprus. Among the ships currently operating near the island are the French frigate FS Languedoc and Greek Navy vessels HN Psara and HN Kimon.
These ships are equipped with advanced radar and air-defense systems capable of detecting and potentially intercepting drones and cruise missiles. By positioning these vessels around Cyprus, European forces are reinforcing the island’s defensive perimeter against possible Iranian drone attacks.
Cyprus has become a key logistical hub and evacuation platform for Western countries operating in the Middle East, making its protection increasingly important as the regional crisis unfolds.
The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, along with its carrier strike group, is also heading toward the Levant, while Spain has announced that it will deploy the air-defense frigate Cristóbal Colón.
The German frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen plays a different role. The ship is currently deployed off the Lebanese coast as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) maritime task force, supporting the Lebanese Navy and monitoring maritime traffic to prevent the illegal transport of weapons.
U.S. Carrier Group Engaged in Combat Operations
Further south in the Eastern Mediterranean, the U.S. Navy carrier strike group centered on USS Gerald R. Ford is actively involved in the ongoing military operations against Iran and in the protection of Israel.
In the past hours, one of the U.S. destroyers (USS Oscar Austin?) operating north of the carrier reportedly intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched toward Cyprus, highlighting the growing air and missile threat across the region.
The Ford strike group provides a powerful air and missile defense umbrella, combining carrier-based aircraft with Aegis-equipped destroyers capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
