An Italian Air Force KC-767A tanker departed Italy today and is heading toward Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following two similar flights carried out yesterday to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The movement comes as several Western military contingents in the Gulf are being temporarily relocated to Saudi territory amid the ongoing regional escalation.
The aircraft involved, registration MM62227, previously flew to the United Arab Emirates in recent days and is now again operating along the same strategic corridor between Europe and the Arabian Peninsula.
The exact purpose of the flight remains unclear. However, the timing strongly suggests it may be linked to the ongoing repositioning of personnel from several Gulf bases.
In recent hours, most of the personnel stationed at Western facilities across the region appear to have been moved to Saudi Arabia. This reportedly includes a large portion of the troops previously based in Kuwait, where Italian Air Force Typhoon fighters had been deployed as part of regional security missions.
A logistics bridge between the Gulf and Italy
The KC-767A is one of the Italian Air Force’s most flexible assets, capable of operating both as an aerial refueling tanker and as a strategic transport platform. In recent crises it has often been used to evacuate personnel or support rapid redeployments.
Yesterday’s flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi may already have been part of this emerging logistical chain. The fact that the same aircraft is now flying toward Riyadh suggests the operation could involve multiple stages, possibly concentrating personnel in Saudi Arabia before further movements.
At this stage two main scenarios appear plausible.
The aircraft could be tasked with repatriating Italian citizens or military personnel who have been relocated from more exposed Gulf bases. Alternatively, it could support the redeployment of Italian Typhoon fighters currently stationed in the region.
If the Typhoons operating from Kuwait are indeed preparing to leave the theater, the KC-767A would be a key enabler, providing aerial refueling during the long transit back to Italy.
A possible sign of repositioning
The broader regional context makes such movements particularly noteworthy. With the ongoing U.S.-led air campaign against Iran intensifying in recent days, several allied nations are reviewing the positioning of their assets across the Gulf.
Relocating personnel to Saudi Arabia would provide both greater depth and improved security compared to more exposed forward bases.
