This afternoon the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle (R91) has entered the Mediterranean, heading east toward the Levant after abruptly leaving operations in the Baltic Sea. The move follows the rapid escalation of the Iran crisis and signals a significant European naval repositioning toward the Middle East. Ordered directly by President Emmanuel Macron in recent days, the deployment aims to reinforce protection for allied forces and regional assets as the conflict widens.
Only a few days ago the French carrier strike group was operating in the Baltic Sea as part of the broader Mission Lafayette 26 deployment, conducting exercises with NATO partners in Northern Europe.
The sudden change of orders — and the decision to redirect the group south — reflects the rapid deterioration of the strategic situation following strikes against Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions across the region.

According to French authorities, the carrier was ordered to redeploy to the Mediterranean to help protect allied forces and strategic assets connected to the Middle East theater.
The decision came after Iranian drone activity and regional escalation raised concerns about the security of Western bases and maritime traffic in the Gulf and eastern Mediterranean.
