Since March 4, the Italian Air Force has conducted at least seven rotations between Italy and the Gulf region, totaling 14 flights (round trips) linking Pratica di Mare Air Base with Riyadh, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. The missions involve two Boeing KC-767A aerial refueling aircraft (registrations MM62227 and MM62229). While the official purpose of these flights has not been disclosed, the pattern suggests a possible redeployment or repatriation of Italian military personnel stationed across Gulf bases.
The activity has continued today, indicating an ongoing air bridge between Italy and the region.
Repeated rotations between Italy and the Gulf
Tracking data over the past few days shows a consistent shuttle pattern operated by the two KC-767A tankers. Since early this week, the aircraft have flown multiple round-trip missions from Pratica di Mare Air Base to several Gulf destinations, primarily Riyadh, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi.
The KC-767A fleet of the Italian Air Force is normally tasked with aerial refueling and strategic transport missions. However, in addition to tanker operations, these aircraft can also carry passengers and cargo, making them suitable for rapid personnel movements during contingency situations.
The tempo of flights – seven rotations in just a few days – suggests a coordinated logistical effort rather than routine transport activity.
Although no official statement has been released by Italian authorities, one possible explanation is the repatriation or relocation of Italian military personnel deployed at bases in the Gulf region.
Italy maintains various military presences and liaison roles across the area, and periods of heightened regional tension can sometimes lead to precautionary movements of personnel.
At the moment it remains unclear whether civilians were also transported on these flights. The absence of official announcements or consular notices makes large-scale civilian evacuation unlikely, suggesting the operation may have been limited primarily to military staff.
The air bridge has not stopped. Additional movements are being observed today, indicating that the operation is still underway.
