This afternoon we’ve tracked a French Navy drone in the skies over the Eastern Mediterranean has provided valuable coordinates regarding the current position of the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), identified by open air traffic radars as a Schiebel Camcopter S-100 (callsign UAV474), was detected cruising the waters south of the island of Cyprus. Since these specific rotary-wing drones, used for reconnaissance and surveillance, take off and are recovered directly from the flight decks of military vessels in the open sea, its presence acts as a true beacon for OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) analysts, confirming the area where the entire French fleet is operating.

A Powerful Multinational European Task Force
The naval group surrounding and protecting the French flagship currently represents one of the most capable maritime deployments in Europe. It is not comprised solely of French ships: the Charles de Gaulle CSG operates as a true joint task force, integrating some of the most advanced units from allied nations to create an impenetrable security bubble.
Escorting the aircraft carrier are:
- ITS Federico Martinengo (F 596): A FREMM-class missile frigate of the Italian Navy, equipped with outstanding anti-submarine and anti-aircraft capabilities, essential for surveillance and point defense.
- ESPS Cristóbal Colón (F-105): An ultra-modern frigate of the Spanish Navy (Álvaro de Bazán class). Thanks to its advanced Aegis combat system, the ship provides very long-range radar coverage and vital anti-aircraft defense for the entire naval group.
- HNLMS Evertsen (F805): A frigate of the Royal Netherlands Navy (De Zeven Provinciën class). The Dutch government has deployed this specialized air defense and command unit specifically to support the French fleet. The Evertsen is equipped with sensors and weapon systems designed to neutralize complex aerial threats.
The Anti-Missile Shield Protecting Cyprus
The positioning of the CSG south of Cyprus is no coincidence and responds to a precise strategic urgency. In a highly tense Middle Eastern context, this massive multinational fleet is deployed to act as a protective shield for the island of Cyprus and the entire Eastern Mediterranean quadrant.
The primary objective of this deployment is to provide credible deterrence and active defense against the concrete threat of attacks conducted with missiles (ballistic and cruise) and swarms of kamikaze drones originating from Iran or its network of allied militias in the region. The extraordinary anti-missile capabilities guaranteed by the radars and interceptors of the Dutch and Spanish frigates, combined with the flexibility of the Rafale fighter jets embarked on the Charles de Gaulle, create a defensive “umbrella.” This shield is capable of intercepting aerial threats before they can reach Cypriot airspace or endanger European strategic assets in the basin.
The integration of France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands under a single operational umbrella demonstrates the firm will of European nations to stand united in ensuring the security of the continent’s southeastern flank.
