On Wednesday, Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare) fighter jets, currently deployed at Ämari Air Base (Estonia) under the NATO enhanced Air Policing (eAP) mission, carried out an Alpha Scramble to intercept a Russian Federation aircraft flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
As confirmed by NATO’s Allied Air Command official channels, the Italian fighters identified and shadowed a Sukhoi Su-30SM (NATO reporting name “Flanker-H”). The operation was conducted safely and in full compliance with standard Alliance procedures, falling within the constant monitoring activities to ensure the integrity of the airspace on NATO’s Eastern flank.
OSINT Focus: The Origin of “42 Blue”
While the exact RF-series registration number is compressed and illegible in the released imagery, cross-referencing the tactical number, the “МА ВМФ РОССИИ” (Russian Naval Aviation) inscription on the tail, and the operational area provides a clear operational picture.
Based on open-source intelligence regarding Russian Baltic Fleet assets, “42 Blue” most likely belongs to:
- Unit: 4th Guards Naval Assault Aviation Regiment (4 GvShAP).
- Homebase: Chernyakhovsk air base, located within the Kaliningrad exclave.
These Naval Aviation Su-30SMs frequently operate in the air corridor connecting Kaliningrad to mainland Russia, making them the most common “targets” for NATO QRA scrambles in the Baltic region.
Operational Focus: Italian Air Force in Estonia
Regarding the current assets defending the Baltic skies, the Italian jets deployed at the Ämari air base for the Baltic Eagle III operation are the Eurofighter Typhoons.
- The Task Force: The Italian contingent operates under the Task Force Air “4th Wing”, composed of around 250 military personnel from the Aeronautica Militare and elements of the Italian Army (providing force protection and anti-aircraft defense via SAMP/T systems).
- The Aircraft: The flight line is composed of Eurofighter Typhoons (led by the 4th Wing from Grosseto, with the usual contribution of personnel and aircraft from the 36th, 37th, and 51st Wings).
- The Commitment: The Italian detachment ensures Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) service 24/7. The TFA “4th Wing” recently celebrated exceeding 500 flight hours protecting the area, having managed numerous complex interceptions in the past months.
