Based on the latest evidence gathered through open sources (OSINT), we take stock of the situation regarding the movements and positions of naval units belonging to the Russian Federation Navy within the Mediterranean Sea.
The current picture, updated as of March 25, shows a dynamic setup characterized by outbound transits towards the Atlantic Ocean, logistical stopovers in North Africa, and usual patrols in the Levantine basin.
Here are the details of the individual tracked units:
📍 Outbound Transit: Strait of Gibraltar
Today, March 25, two surface units left the Mediterranean Sea, transiting the Strait of Gibraltar heading west (westbound). These are:
- RFS Severomorsk: Udaloy-class destroyer.
- Kama: Support tanker. This movement marks the naval group’s exit from the Mediterranean theater, likely to return to their home bases or to continue operations in Atlantic waters.
📍 Technical Stopover in North Africa: Oran, Algeria
Moving to the southwestern Mediterranean, a significant logistical stop for the Russian submarine fleet has been recorded. The conventional propulsion submarine Krasnodar (Kilo-class) arrived at the port of Oran, Algeria, on March 24. According to available information, the boat will remain moored there for at least four days. This port call confirms the consolidated naval relations and logistical support Moscow enjoys in the ports of its Algerian partner.
📍 Eastern Mediterranean and the Syrian Axis
Regarding the eastern basin, the hub of Russian operations remains the naval base of Tartus in Syria. The corvette RFS Stoikiy (Steregushchiy-class) left its moorings at the Syrian base sometime after March 15. Currently, the unit is believed to be conducting patrol or escort operations in the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Please Note: As is customary in naval tracking, please remember that this mapping is not exhaustive. The list of units and their respective positions are based solely on the cross-referencing and analysis of open sources (Open Source Intelligence) available at the time of writing.
