The Hellenic Navy confirms its leading role in regional maritime security by maintaining a broad and diversified operational deployment. Greek units are currently engaged in various international and national missions, ranging from the heart of the Mediterranean Sea to the strategic waters of the Gulf of Aden, demonstrating a strong commitment to both NATO and the European Union.

Based on information gathered from open sources (OSINT), here is the updated picture of the main Greek naval units currently at sea:

Central Mediterranean

  • HS Heracles (Support Vessel): The unit is currently serving the important role of Flagship for the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG2). According to the latest updates, the ship was in Malta on March 24.

2. HS Aegean (Frigate): The unit is cruising in the central Mediterranean as an asset of Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, contributing to the European Union’s efforts to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya.

Eastern Mediterranean (Cyprus)

In response to growing regional tensions, Greece has strengthened its presence in the far east of the Mediterranean:

  • HS Psara (Frigate) and HS Kimon (Frigate): Both frigates are deployed off the coast of Cyprus. Their primary objective is to provide a defensive umbrella to protect the island from potential threats, specifically from Iranian missiles and drones.

Red Sea / Gulf of Aden

Pushing well beyond its territorial waters, the Hellenic Navy is actively contributing to the security of global trade routes:

HS Hydra (Frigate): The unit has crossed the Suez Canal and is currently located in the Gulf of Aden / Red Sea. It operates as an asset of Operation EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, the defensive mission launched by the European Union to protect transiting merchant ships from attacks originating in Yemen.

N.B. The list is not exhaustive and is based solely on open sources.
