This afternonn we tracked the flight of a US Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon navigating over the Mediterranean Sea, en route to NAS Sigonella in Sicily.
Origin of the track and context
We do not know with absolute certainty which airbase the aircraft departed from. As the track shows, the P-8’s signal only appeared on flight tracking systems once it entered Israeli airspace, arriving from the south/southeast.
It is highly likely that the aircraft came from Saudi Arabia or the broader Persian Gulf area, a region where US Navy P-8s have been operating extensively since the beginning of the conflict and tensions with Iran. It should be noted that we cannot identify the exact registration of the individual aircraft, as the P-8s deployed in this area use tactical hexcodes for operational security reasons.
Mission analysis
Analyzing the flight path and the logistical situation allows us to draw a few conclusions. Given the flight restrictions from Sigonella to the Gulf, we can hypothesize that the aircraft was not conducting an active patrol mission. Furthermore, considering the considerable distance involved, it is not operationally plausible for Poseidons to conduct missions directly over the Persian Gulf by taking off from Sicily. In all likelihood, this was a relocation or transit flight. It is presumably a P-8 returning to its Sicilian base after a temporary deployment in the Gulf area, possibly as part of a routine rotation of assets.
