The intense electronic surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) activity by NATO assets along the Alliance’s eastern flank continues unabated.
In the last few hours, we have tracked a highly interesting mission conducted by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) over northeastern Europe.
The protagonist of this mission is a Boeing RC-135W “Rivet Joint” (registration ZZ664 – callsign RRR7208). Taking off from the United Kingdom (British RC-135s traditionally operate from RAF Waddington), the aircraft crossed the airspace of the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland before entering its primary area of operation.
As clearly shown by the ADS-B track, the British asset focused its data collection activity on two specific sectors:
- The Russian exclave of Kaliningrad: The aircraft performed flight patterns (orbiting and flying back-and-forth routes) both to the south, flying in Polish airspace, and to the north/east, operating in Lithuanian airspace, virtually encircling this highly militarized and strategic area for Moscow.
- The borders of the Baltic States: Subsequently, the RC-135W pushed further north, flying along the eastern borders of Latvia and Estonia. From here, it monitored the airspace and electromagnetic activities originating from nearby Russia (specifically the St. Petersburg and Pskov areas) and Belarus from a safe distance.
The Role of the Rivet Joint
It is worth noting that the Boeing RC-135W is a platform highly specialized in SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) and COMINT (Communications Intelligence). Thanks to its sophisticated onboard sensor suite, the crew can intercept, analyze, and geolocate radar emissions (for example, identifying adversary air defense systems) and enemy radio communications.
Missions of this type, conducted daily by British, American, and other NATO aircraft, are fundamental for keeping the Russian electronic “Order of Battle” in the Baltic Sea region up to date and ensuring vital early warning capabilities for the Atlantic Alliance.
