USAF A-10 Redeployment to the Middle East Continues After Ceasefire with Iran, Signaling Post-Truce Airpower Positioning

Today, just hours after the announcement of a fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, the USAF completed a major Coronet East deployment moving A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft from Europe toward the Middle East. Two KC-135R tankers (BORA25 and BORA35) departed Glasgow Prestwick escorting 12 A-10s from RAF Lakenheath, with additional tankers (BORA26 and BORA36) taking over in the central Mediterranean.

The timing is critical: this movement comes immediately after weeks of open conflict and the overnight truce, highlighting that U.S. force posture is not being reduced—but repositioned.

A deployment that continues despite the ceasefire

The operation followed a standard but carefully layered tanker bridge across Europe and the Mediterranean. Initial refueling support was provided over Western Europe, before a second wave of KC-135s ensured continuity toward the Eastern Mediterranean.

This is not a drawdown profile.

Instead, it is a controlled relocation of assets into theater at the exact moment diplomacy pauses active combat. The likely destination remains Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, already heavily trafficked in recent days by C-17 logistics flights.

This suggests pre-positioning rather than disengagement.

Strategic meaning: deterrence during a fragile pause

The ceasefire announced overnight is explicitly temporary and conditional, with major unresolved issues including control of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program

In this context, deploying A-10s now carries a very specific signal:

– maintaining immediate close air support capability
– ensuring rapid strike options if the ceasefire collapses
– reinforcing presence without escalating to high-end assets like F-35s or bombers

The A-10 is particularly suited for sustained operations in semi-permissive environments—exactly the kind of scenario that could emerge if the truce fails.

This is where the timing becomes telling.

Moving CAS platforms after a ceasefire is not about warfighting—it is about shaping what comes next.

Whether this marks the start of a longer-term deployment linked to post-conflict stabilization—or a contingency posture for renewed strikes—remains unclear.

Tanker reinforcement confirms sustained operations

The handover from BORA25/35 to BORA26/36 mid-route is another key indicator. This level of tanker orchestration is typically associated with long-duration deployments rather than short-term movements.

It also reflects the continued strain on aerial refueling assets, which have been heavily engaged throughout the conflict over the past weeks.

Even in a pause, the air bridge remains active.

What to watch next

In the coming days, three indicators will be crucial:

– confirmation of A-10 basing in Jordan
– first operational sorties post-arrival
– integration with ISR and strike packages already active in the region

At the same time, the ceasefire itself remains highly fragile, with conflicting interpretations and ongoing tensions on multiple fronts

If the truce holds, these aircraft may support a stabilisation posture.
If it fails, they are already exactly where they need to be.

And that, today, is likely the real objective.
